January 16, 1963 - Harvey Gantt desegregates Clemson College.
In 1960, Gantt is quarterback and class salutatorian at Charleston's all-black Burke High School. Unable to attend the segregated universities of South Carolina, Gantt enrolls at a midwestern university. Gantt, however, does not give up. Three years later, after a federal appeals court decision, he becomes the first black student to enroll at Clemson College. He will later graduate with a degree in architecture.
